If this sounds familiar…

  • You meant to do spellings this week. Again. But life got in the way.
  • Your child learns the list for Friday’s test and forgets it all by Monday.
  • You have tried flashcards, apps, writing them out three times. Nothing sticks.
  • The 11+ is getting closer and you are not sure which words they need to know.
  • You want them to practise on their own, but they need you there to test them.

Consistency is the hard part. That is what Spelling Bees builds.

A week with Spelling Bees

Three parts a family flips between in a week. Each one is short, and each one feeds the others.

Daily Buzz

Ten words a day, school words first, then book words, then the bank. Hear each one, learn its meaning and origin, then spell it from hearing.

School Spelling Bees

Type in the week’s list the day it comes home, one word per box. Your child practises a little each day, takes our test before Friday’s as a rehearsal, and any misses feed back into later sessions.

Book Bees

A word met while reading goes in, and back comes a child-friendly card: meaning, example sentence, similar words, opposites, origin. It stays in your child’s own words and visits the Daily Buzz, turning a word they did not know into one they do.

How you see it working

Word Grid

One honeycomb map of the whole bank: Year 3/4, Year 5/6 and 11+ vocabulary. Green mastered, amber learning, cream not yet.

Honeypot

Daily scores as a bar chart across the weeks, with the school’s real test result alongside and the words to nail. Once a month the Monthly Nectar Run rounds the month up in one big test.

Ten minutes a day. One payment for the whole family.

How it works

Every spelling uses Cover-Copy-Compare, a retrieval-practice method drawn from the cognitive science of memory (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006) to build lasting recall.

1

See the word

Read it, hear it, spot the tricky bit in amber.

2

Cover it

The word disappears. Hold it in your mind.

3

Type it

Spell it from memory. No peeking.

4

Compare

Letter by letter: green for right, red for wrong. Learn from the miss straight away.

Words your child gets wrong come back sooner. Words they know well space out further. The app remembers so you do not have to.

700+ words your child needs to know.

Every statutory spelling word from the national curriculum, plus the vocabulary that comes up again and again in 11+ exams. British English throughout (colour, practise, organise): the spellings your child’s school marks as correct.

Built for independence

10 minutes a day

Short enough to fit before school, after dinner, or in the car. Ten words a day, no marathon sessions.

Spaced repetition that adapts

The app tracks which words your child finds hard and brings them back at the right time. Words they know well space out on their own.

Mastery you can see

Every word on the Word Grid turns amber as your child learns it and green once it is mastered. Your child watches the grid fill up, and that keeps them going.

Starts at the right level

A 15-word level check works out where your child should begin, so they skip what they already know and are not overwhelmed by what they do not.

Parents ask…

Rebecca Everton, founder of Spelling Bees

Why I built Spelling Bees

I’m Rebecca, a working mother of two girls, with a background in psychology, and the person behind Spelling Bees. I built it for my own daughter first.

I watched the same thing happen every week: the Friday spelling test crammed on Thursday night, and forgotten by the next Monday. She could spell perfectly well. Nothing was helping the words stick, because nothing was bringing them back.

So I built the system I wanted for her: ten minutes a day she can do on her own, a method drawn from how memory works, and words that come back at the right moment instead of being forgotten. That is the whole idea.
